Navigating the Wilderness: A Guide to Water Storage Solutions for Overlanding

Embarking on a journey around the world in a Jeep Gladiator with limited space requires careful consideration of essentials, and one of the most critical elements is water storage. As a family of four venturing into remote territories, we understand the significance of having a reliable water storage system. In this blog, we'll share our experiences with various water storage solutions, highlighting the pros and cons of each to help fellow overlanders and car campers make informed choices.

  • Capacity: 7 gallons

  • Material: BPA-free plastic

  • Dimensions: 15.75 x 11 x 11 inches

  • Pros: Budget-friendly, suitable for starters

  • Cons: Cheap plastic prone to wear and tear, not ideal for heavy use

Our journey began with the Reliance Aqua Tainer, a budget-friendly option that served us well initially. However, the cheap plastic construction proved less durable over time, resulting in an unfortunate leak. While it's an excellent starting point, especially for those on a tight budget, it may not withstand the demands of frequent use in rugged conditions.

  • Capacity: 7 gallons (plus an additional 4-gallon secondary container)

  • Material: HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

  • Dimensions: 15.75 x 11 x 22.75 inches

  • Pros: Increased water capacity

  • Cons: Tendency to tip over, especially on uneven terrain

The Reliance Jumbo Tainer offered expanded water capacity, addressing one of our initial concerns. However, its tendency to tip over became a drawback, especially during bumpy rides on uneven terrains. This design flaw impacted usability, making it less practical for families on the move.

  • Capacity: 5 gallons

  • Material: BPA-free, food-grade plastic

  • Dimensions: 13.8 x 6.7 x 18.5 inches

  • Pros: Durable design, suitable for rough terrains

  • Cons: Bulky and large, challenging for smaller individuals to use

Built for durability and rugged terrains, the Scepter Portable Military Water Storage Container impressed us with its robust design. However, its large size posed a challenge, particularly for Amanda and the boys, making it difficult for them to access water independently. Despite its sturdiness, the container's impractical size became a limiting factor.

  • Capacity: 39.6 gallons

  • Material: Rotomolded plastic

  • Dimensions: 41.3 x 18.1 x 8.7 inches

  • Pros: Durable construction, compatible with roof racks, hose attachments for versatile use

  • Cons: Larger size may be challenging for some vehicles

The Front Runner Pro Water Tank emerged as a game-changer in our water storage journey. Its durable construction and compatibility with roof racks make it ideal for rough terrains. The added benefit of hose attachments, including a shower hose, enhances its functionality, providing a versatile solution for on-the-go water needs.

  • Capacity: 2.6 gallons

  • Material: BPA-free plastic

  • Dimensions: 14.4 x 10 x 6.5 inches

  • Pros: Durable, modular design, Nalgene-style lid for attachment to water filters, faucet attachment for versatility

  • Cons: Smaller capacity may require more frequent refills

Currently, our preferred choice is the Dometic GO Water Jug, combining durability with a modular design that suits our space constraints. Its compact size makes it easy to manage, and the Nalgene-style lid allows for convenient attachment to water filters. The inclusion of the Dometic water faucet attachment adds a practical touch, making it a versatile and user-friendly option.

Selecting the right water storage solution for overlanding is crucial for a successful and enjoyable journey. While each option has its strengths and weaknesses, our experience led us to the Front Runner Pro Water Tank on the roof rack and the Dometic GO Water Jug on the bumper. These choices offer a balance of durability, usability, and space efficiency. For a visual comparison, check out our YouTube video showcasing these water storage solutions. Remember, a reliable water storage system ensures you stay hydrated, even in the most remote corners of the world. Safe travels!
