Must Have Gear For The North Cascades
Washington has a diverse landscape that requires different gear for each area. The North Cascades are unique because they have a little bit of everything. We've put together a list of our 5 must-have items for this epic outdoor playground.
Water Tank
There are a ton of options for water storage, but this Front Runner water tank mounts to our roof rack for easy access. The water tank has a convenient faucet that controls the gravity fed water when we need a refill. In addition to the water tank, we highly recommend getting a quality, BPA free water bottle. We use Nalgene bottles for the entire family! Check out the large bottles and the small bottles (perfect for kids)!
Hiking Boots
The summer months are heavenly in the North Cascades. Be sure to plan on visiting one of the many river or lake spots available, but don't forget your hiking boots. There are tons of trails all over the area that you won't want to miss! We run Solomon boots and the boys use Merrell children's boots.
Garmin InReach
Cell phone service is non-existent in the North Cascades, and spotty in the surrounding towns. Adventuring in the backcountry means taking more of a risk. Leave stress behind and invest in a GPS communicator! The Garmin InReach Mini allows you to start and stop service anytime and offers multiple plan options. We choose the plan that allows text messages to be sent so we can let loved ones know everything is ok. If something goes south, we have the emergency button to send for help.
Good Lighting
Once you leave the glow of city lights, you'll get to see the blanket of stars that covers the North Cascades. As beautiful as it is, it's a little difficult to maneuver around camp. We highly recommend these string lights that can be hung on your rig, tent or even in the trees. These lights give off enough light to see, but doesn't take away from the stunning view.
Warm Layers
The weather in the North Cascades can be complicated. There are days where we'll see sun and snow, making clothing choices extremely important. We always bring a rain layer and an insulation layer, even if we expect a mostly sunny forecast. Quality gear will go a long way in the backcountry! We highly recommend the Beyond Clothing line for men and women. Our boys, at 6 and 7, can even fit in some of the XS shirts. Whatever you choose, make sure you pack for a variety of weather!
Visiting the North Cascades is a journey that will awaken your sense of adventure and leave an indelible mark on your soul. With its majestic peaks, alpine lakes, diverse trails, and abundant wildlife, this outdoor paradise offers something for every outdoor enthusiast. Whether you seek adrenaline-pumping activities or a peaceful retreat into nature's embrace, the North Cascades will exceed your expectations. Pack your gear, lace up your boots, and prepare to be enchanted by the untamed beauty of this wilderness.
